Rumor Refutation:Can Walking with One’s Head Tilted Backwards Stop Nosebleeds?

Rumor :Walking with your head up can stop nosebleeds.

✔/✗:This is a wrong statement

The blood vessels inside the nasal cavity are densely distributed and sensitive. Most nosebleeds occur due to the rupture of capillaries, leading to bleeding.

Tilting the head backward may stop the blood from flowing out externally, but it actually allows the blood to flow inward.
This poses certain risks, as the blood may flow down the nasal cavity or throat into the esophagus and stomach, causing discomfort and nausea.
Even if the bleeding is heavy, it may flow into the trachea, leading to asphyxia and potential accidents. Therefore, this method is incorrect.

Correct Ways to Stop a Nosebleed

  • Pressure hemostasis

Patients with generally mild bleeding can achieve hemostasis by resting, gently pressing from both sides of the nostrils toward the middle of the nasal bone, or packing the nasal cavity with cotton balls for a few minutes.

  • Lower your head, not raise it

Gently lower your head to let the blood flow out of the nostrils. Then, press the bleeding part of the nasal wings with your thumb and forefinger for 5 minutes, applying enough pressure to stop the bleeding. After 5 minutes, the nosebleed will basically stop.

  • Apply a cold towel to your head

Applying a cold compress or a wet towel to the forehead and back of the neck can help constrict blood vessels and reduce bleeding.

  • Seek medical attention for heavy bleeding

In cases of heavy bleeding, the bleeding point is often located at the back of the nasal cavity or nasopharynx, and self-hemostasis is ineffective.
This may be due to the rupture of larger blood vessels or hemangiomas, or coagulation dysfunction caused by systemic diseases mentioned earlier.
In such cases, immediately seek medical attention nearby, and remember to spit out the blood during the trip instead of swallowing it.
